چکیده
en Europe. It is estimated that 200 million of the 350 million adults living in the EU are overweight or obese. In fact, the proportion of overweight and obese men is even higher in some European countries than it is in the USA. Of greatest concern is the fact that the number of overweight children in the EU is increasing by 400 000 every year, a warning that the obesity problem will be far worse in the future. Obesity increases the risk of heart disease, diabetes, stroke, respiratory disease, arthritis and cancer. This disease burden has a disastrous effect on health and costs 7% of the total EU health-care spending. The risk of developing obesity-related conditions can be reduced by losing as little as 5% of body weight. However, publichealth campaigns to promote healthy eating and exercise have not stopped Europeans becoming progressively fatter. Currently available drug treatments in combination with diet produce only modest short-term weight loss and are limited by side-effects. Cutting-edge science

Minireview: Gut peptides regulating satiety.
The gastrointestinal tract and the pancreas release hormones regulating satiety and body weight. Ghrelin stimulates appetite, and glucagon-like peptide-1, oxyntomodulin, peptide YY, cholecystokinin, and pancreatic polypeptide inhibit appetite. These gut hormones act to markedly alter food intake in humans and rodents. Obesity is the current major cause of premature death in the United Kingdom, ...
متن کاملAction and therapeutic potential of oxyntomodulin☆
Oxyntomodulin (OXM) is a peptide hormone released from the gut in post-prandial state that activates both the glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP1R) and the glucagon receptor (GCGR) resulting in superior body weight lowering to selective GLP1R agonists. OXM reduces food intake and increases energy expenditure in humans. While activation of the GCGR increases glucose production posing a hyperg...
متن کاملSubcutaneous oxyntomodulin reduces body weight in overweight and obese subjects: a double-blind, randomized, controlled trial.
This study investigated the effect of subcutaneously administered oxyntomodulin on body weight in healthy overweight and obese volunteers. Participants self-administered saline or oxyntomodulin subcutaneously in a randomized, double-blind, parallel-group protocol. Injections were self-administered for 4 weeks, three times daily, 30 min before each meal. The volunteers were asked to maintain the...

INTRODUCTION Amphetamines, rimonabant and sibutramine licenses as anti-obesity drugs have been withdrawn because of their adverse effects. In fact, orlistat is the only available long-term treatment for obesity. AREAS COVERED The efficacy and safety of long-term drug therapy is very important in the management obesity; for this reason, the authors decided to conduct a review on the efficacy a...
متن کاملA new stable GIP-Oxyntomodulin hybrid peptide improved bone strength both at the organ and tissue levels in genetically-inherited type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) progress worldwide with detrimental effects on several physiological systems including bone tissue mainly by affecting bone quality. Several gut hormones analogues have been proven potent in ameliorating bone quality. In the present study, we used the leptin receptor-deficient db/db mice as a model of obesity and severe T2DM to assess the extent of bo...
